Throughout
its 150-year history, Omega has consistently played the
role of pioneer in the field of watchmaking. Their pioneering
spirit extends to fields as varied as the exploration of
the universe and the ocean depths and their expertise is
called upon for timekeeping the world's most prestigious
sporting events.
Only
one watch survived NASA's tests - undoubtedly the toughest
ever devised - to choose a chronograph for use in its Apollo
lunar programme : the Omega Speedmaster, the only watch
to be worn on the moon. Omega's association with space exploration
has since remained legendary, with the Speedmaster still
flight-qualified by NASA and chosen by the Russian space
agency.
Omega
has been official timekeeper of 21 Olympic Games as well
as the world Bobsleigh Tour. Furthermore, Omega is responsible
for numerous pioneering developments in sports timing, including
the world's first 1/1000th of second photofinish camera
and the now indespensible touch pads used to time swimming
events.
The
same pioneering spirit is found in Omega's quality timepieces:
the most recent example being the De Ville Co-Axial - the
world's first series-produced watch with Co-Axial Escapement,
which offers improved reliability and greater service intervals.
