A
wedding ring is possibly the most significant piece of jewellery
you will ever buy - but what should you buy? When should you buy
it? How much should you spend?
Peter
Jackson the Jeweller is able to offer you a superb collection
of wedding rings in 9, 18 or 22 carat yellow or white gold and
platinum with prices from under £100 up to several thousand.
We have just introduced a collection of palladium wedding rings.
This fabulous metal is a member of the platinum family but at
a fraction of the cost.
Our
highly trained team will be happy to offer you lots of help and
advice, but here are a few tips to start you off:
What
does carat mean and what are the differences?
Pure gold is expressed as being “24 carat”, and is
a relatively soft metal, so it is mixed, or alloyed with other
metals to make it stronger and more affordable. 18 carat gold,
therefore is 18 parts gold out of 24, or 75% pure gold.
What
is White Gold?
White gold is made by mixing yellow gold with white metals. It
is then plated with Rhodium to give it the brilliant white sparkling
effect.
So
what is Platinum?
Platinum is a white metal which is rarer and even more precious
than gold. It is also harder, and therefore more difficult to
work with. Unlike white gold, a platinum wedding ring will never
need re-plating; it simply has to be polished, and it will look
like new again.
How
much should we spend?
This is the most difficult question of all. The best advice is
to buy good quality from a reputable jeweller - you want a ring
that will literally last a lifetime. A good quality 18 carat gold
wedding ring can cost from about £250, or you can spend
anywhere between a few hundred and a few thousand pounds on a
platinum or diamond set wedding ring.
When
should we order our rings?
As most wedding rings have to be specially made, it is best to
give us as much time as possible. We would usually like about
six weeks notice, but should be able to produce a wedding ring
in as little as a week if necessary.
