In partnership with The Royal Observatory; founded in 1675, Bremont look to Britain’s most important history with time, to celebrate the past and the future, dedicating this piece to ‘Longitude’.
King Charles II tasked the first ‘Astronomer Royal’, John Flamsteed, with ‘perfecting the art of navigation at sea’. Astronomers believed lunar distances or the positions of Jupiter’s moons could be used to determine longitude. Using these methods required an accurate map of the stars. Flamsteed devoted himself to this enormous task, using a telescopic instrument to chart nearly 3,000 stars.
Flamsteed’s work laid the foundations for accurate timekeeping and navigation. At Greenwich, the brass Flamsteed Meridian line marks the historic position where he made his observations and in 1884 The International Meridian Conference agreed that the world should adopt Greenwich as the centre of time and longitude zero.
What is amazing is the world-famous brass Flamsteed Meridian line has had a piece cut from it to incorporate into Bremont’s latest limited edition. For something so special to be given to Bremont, they need something equally fitting, to produce a watch that is truly Great British heritage and the next part of our history, what resulted is the ‘ENG300 Movement’ Bremont’s first fully manufactured movement.
Original brass from the historic Flamsteed Meridian Line at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, London, can be seen forming a ring in the back of the Longitude timepiece, engraved with the serial number of the watch. Other key features include a tribute to Bremont’s new state of the art facility, ’The Wing’; a custom balance bridge and full tungsten rotor both designed to reflect the architecture.
With a power reserve of 65 hours, this special timepiece has its power reserve indicator at the 6 o’clock position resembling the Royal Observatory Greenwich’s red time ball, a simple yet ingenious visual device that gave nineteenth century sailors accurate time. The Longitude also features a big date function and an off-set seconds hand at 9-o’clock.
The 40mm body of the watch is formed in warm 18ct rose gold adding an extra element of luxury to the prestigious watch. Bremont still retain their Trip-Tick® construction with scratch resistant PVD treated case barrel for protection of the movement while the dark dial sits behind a domed anti-reflective, scratch resistant sapphire crystal. Equipped to the watch is a hand stitched brown alligator strap with rose gold buckle.
